Elizabeth Shanahan grew up in the foothills of North Carolina, a rural area that is nevertheless saturated with fine and performing arts. This being the case, she was exposed to and fascinated with the arts from a young age. Her homeschool education had a deep focus in art, music, theater, and literature, and these early exposures have a significant impact on her work and life today.
Shanahan earned her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from Appalachian State University in December of 2015, graduating Summa cum Laude with University and Art Department Honors. During her time at AppState, Shanahan studied at l'Academia Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, Italy, completing a semester long internship as an English, Spanish, and Italian-speaking tour guide to the art of the Duomo for Ars et Fides. She also completed a month long residency at Camac Centre D'Art in Marnay-sur-Seine, France in the summer of 2015 while working on her honors thesis, Humantās: In Defense of Personhood.
Since 2015, Shanahan's work has been shown in group exhibitions throughout the Southeast, as well as New York and the Louvre Museum in Paris. She has had solo exhibitions at the Looking Glass Gallery in Boone, NC, and the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum in Blowing Rock, NC, and a two person exhibition with artist Rebecca Bremer at the Nth Degree Gallery in Boone, NC. In 2017, she began traveling to show in art fairs in the Southeast and has shown at Chastain Park Spring Arts and Crafts Festival and Spring Festival on Ponce in Atlanta, GA, Barefoot in the Park in Buford, GA, Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival in Cary, NC, Asheville Fine Art Show in Asheville, NC, Arts in the Park in Blowing Rock, NC, American Artisan Festival in Nashville, TN, and Arts in the Middle in Urbanna Virginia.
Elizabeth Shanahan currently lives in Lewisville, NC with her husband, Kevin Northrup, co-owner of Silver Bullets Design concert lighting design firm, their baby daughter, their hyperactive, quivering, spotted cattle dog, and a chronically disgruntled orange cat.
