If you don’t like the weather in North Carolina, just wait five minutes, or so the saying goes. In the Appalachian foothills where I grew up, the ridge across the horizon, a hazy blue line on humid sunny days, the wall over which waves of misty cloud seep on cold mornings, or the black silhouette against a backdrop of wild rain and lightning, was the dramatic frame within which we lived our lives. The land itself didn’t disappoint either: waterfalls, forest, rivers, and fields offer a thousand vistas, each changing with the season and every five-minute increment of weather. During my childhood, encircled in the long arm of the mountains, I came to associate these landscapes and dramatic weather patterns with memory and emotion. Travelling throughout North America, Europe, and China, the association was broadened. Today, my work uses the colors and forms of nature to evoke specific feelings and memories in every piece.
My mixed media paintings make use of oil and acrylic paint, glass and metal fragments, feathers, snakeskin, and other found and natural objects to describe the spectacle and eloquence of nature. My pieces range in size from 8x8 inches to 8x8 feet and are made with a variety of techniques including brushes, knives, soft towels, and my own hands.
